Indiana Congressman Steve Buyer meets with credit unions representatives in district
August 23, 2005

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- While he was home in his district during the August recess, Congressman Steve Buyer (R-4) accepted the League’s invitation to meet with credit union representatives from his district. The meeting was in the form of a roundtable discussion and was held in the board room at Purdue EFCU. State Senator Brandt Hershman (R-Monticello), who is Rep. Buyer’s district operations director, accompanied the congressman.

League President John McKenzie and VP of Governmental Affairs Chris Beaumont opened the meeting with remarks about how passage of the CURIA bill would benefit consumers and small business owners who are credit union members. They reviewed modernization and new powers legislation passed by Congress for banks during the past six years while emphasizing that H.R. 1151 did not provide any new powers for credit unions. Their remarks also touched on the importance of the federal tax exemption and how it is benefiting credit union members. Attendees offered examples of how CURIA would help them better serve their members.

Rep. Buyer also heard information from the group about the structure of credit unions as well as the role they play in meeting the needs of consumers and small businesses in their communities. "Small businesses are the engine of our economy," Buyer said.

After discussing credit union issues for most of the meeting, the congressman, who is chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee and a member of the Energy & Commerce and Health Care Committees, told the group about other things he is doing on constituents’ behalf, including the myriad of medical issues associated with soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, and sifting through regulatory and other considerations associated with the cable TV and telecommunications issues such as Voice over Internet Protocols (VoIP).

"We had a very positive exchange," said McKenzie, "and appreciate the congressman’s willingness to engage in such an in-depth discussion of issues that are important to credit unions."
