INDIANAPOLIS – The 71st Annual Meeting
and Convention of the Indiana Credit Union League was held Oct. 6-8 at the
Convention Center in Indianapolis. The chairmen of all three national credit
union system organizations gave reports at the Annual Business Meeting on Oct.
8: CUNA Mutual Group Board Chairman Loretta Burd; CUNA Chairman Juri Valdov and
Dave Preter, Mid-States Corporate FCU president/CEO who is also Board Chairman
at U.S. Central. It was the first meeting outside of CUNA for its newly-elected
chairman, Juri Valdov.
The remarks from League President John McKenzie
and Valdov focused on political involvement, protecting credit union interests
against attacks on our federal tax exemption, and furthering credit union
interests through H.R. 2317, the Credit Union Regulatory Improvements Act
(CURIA). Burd reported on CUNA Mutual Group initiatives; Preter talked about
Mid-States Corporate FCU’s commitment to serving Indiana’s credit unions. As
part of the partnership between Mid-States and the Indiana League, the corporate
credit union is the premier sponsor of the League’s Convention.
“There is room for everyone at the table of
political involvement,” McKenzie told the business meeting attendees,
encouraging them to be involved in the many opportunities available, and
commending them for providing the kind of service and value for their members
that allows our credit union message to legislators to be so compelling.
Congressman Mike Sodrel, a CURIA co-sponsor, also
attended the Convention and was presented with the 2005 Outstanding Hoosier
Legislator Award from the League.
Another national organization chairman who attended the Convention was Gary
Irvin, Board Chairman of the Credit Union Executives Society, who was inducted
into the Indiana Credit Union Hall of Fame. Irvin is president/CEO of FORUM CU
in Fishers, Ind.
