INDIANAPOLIS — Congressman Mike Sodrel, who represents Indiana’s 9th Congressional District, has been named as the Indiana Credit Union League’s Outstanding Hoosier Legislator for 2005.  The award is given each year during the League’s annual convention to honor a legislator who has gone the extra mile to support Indiana’s credit unions and their 2.2 million members.  He accepted the award during the League’s statewide convention on Saturday, October 8.

“It is an honor to serve you and an honor to receive this award,” he said as he addressed the group. He told the group that as a business owner, several years ago he asked his employees what could be added to improve their benefits plan.  His employees asked for the ability to join a credit union.  Rep. Sodrel also talked to the group about experiences he has had during this year, his freshman year in Congress, and explained some of his historical inspiration for serving the people of Indiana.

In April, Rep. Sodrel, voted to pass bankruptcy reform legislation, which had long been a top priority for credit unions. And recently, he signed on to co-sponsor H.R. 2317, the Credit Union Regulatory Improvements Act (CURIA), legislation that will improve the regulatory environment in which credit unions operate to serve their members.

Since taking office in January, Congressman Sodrel has met with credit union leaders on several occasions both in Washington, D.C. and in his district.  “His accessibility as well as his receptiveness to our message about how consumers and small business owners benefit from credit unions, has been tremendous,” said League President John McKenzie.  “We appreciate very much his co-sponsorship of H.R. 2317 and that he has been so supportive of credit unions as a new congressman.”
