WASHINGTON, D.C. – More than 80 credit union representatives from Indiana
attended CUNA’s GAC and delivered the credit union message to the state’s
congressmen on Capitol Hill last week. Topics of discussion included the
benefits to members of credit unions’ federal tax exemption, regulatory relief
and responding to attacks from banking groups.
The group met directly with Sen. Richard Lugar and five of the state’s U.S.
Representatives over a two-day span. Additionally, there were meetings with
legislative assistants in the offices of other Indiana Congressmen.
“This is one of the largest groups from Indiana that we have ever taken to
the Governmental Affairs Conference, and it included several first time
attendees,” said League President John McKenzie. “We appreciate the support of
credit unions expressed by those we met with and we are particularly honored to
have met with Sen. Lugar, a steadfast credit union supporter since he has been
in the Senate, in his Senate Foreign Relations Committee Room.” Sen. Lugar is
the longest serving U.S. Senator in Indiana history.
