ROCHESTER, Ind.-- Congressman Chris Chocola, who represents Indiana’s Second Congressional District, has been named by the Indiana Credit Union League as an Outstanding Hoosier Legislator for 2006. The award is given each year to honor legislators who have gone the extra mile to support Indiana’s credit unions and their 2.2 million members. He accepted the award before an audience of credit union representatives during a district meeting on Aug. 28 in Rochester. His selection as a recipient of the award will also be celebrated at a luncheon during the League’s statewide convention on Sept. 23.

“I am a big fan of member-owned organizations,” he said as he accepted the award, explaining that credit unions “make our community a better place.” He told the group that he appreciates his relationship with credit unions and thanked them for helping the people in their communities.

Rep. Chocola’s advocacy of the credit union movement is strengthened by several key contacts at Indiana credit unions, two of whom presented him with the award: Teachers CU President Rick Rice, and Bayer FCU President/CEO Dallas Bergl. Both men are members of the Indiana Credit Union League’s Governmental Affairs Committee.

During the district meeting Rep. Chocola spoke about credit union issues as well as broader topics of local and national significance including the national deficit and the war on terror.

During opening comments at the meeting, League President John McKenzie emphasized Congressman Chocola’s support of credit unions, particularly his advocacy of the tax exemption during the Nov. 3 House Ways & Means Committee hearing, as well as his willingness to meet with credit unions so often. He thanked the congressman for that support which benefits more than 330,000 credit union members in the Second Congressional District.
