INDIANAPOLIS—Congresswoman Julia Carson (D-7), the first African-American and
first woman to represent Indianapolis in Congress, died Saturday, Dec. 15 after
a battle with lung cancer. Rep. Carson was first elected to Congress in 1996 and
was a longtime member of the House Financial Services Committee.
“Congresswoman Julia Carson was a friend to credit unions, always believing
in them and openly praising credit unions’ ability to serve citizens from all
walks of life,” said Indiana League President John McKenzie. “She was generous
with her time on behalf of Indiana’s credit unions, accepting the League’s
invitations to meet with credit union constituents on many occasions at events
in her home district and in Washington, D.C. We mourn her loss along with the
millions whose lives she touched—both in Indiana and across the country.”
