INDIANAPOLIS – Karen Madry, President/CEO of Afena FCU, was inducted into the Indiana Credit Union Hall of Fame on Oct. 2 as part of the League’s annual convention. The Hall of Fame is the League’s highest honor, recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to the credit union movement.
Throughout her career, Madry has been a passionate advocate for underserved communities, small credit unions, and the cooperative principles that define the credit union movement. Under her leadership, Afena FCU has developed innovative, compassionate programs designed to improve members’ financial well-being, while building an organizational culture centered on service and making a difference in people's lives.
Madry’s commitment to advocacy extends well beyond her credit union. As chairwoman of a national small credit union committee, she championed the interests of smaller institutions and helped highlight the unique challenges they face. Her leadership and advocacy earned national recognition, including an invitation to testify before the U.S. Senate Banking Committee on behalf of credit unions nationwide.
Her contributions have also reached far beyond the United States. Madry provided award-winning assistance with disaster recovery efforts in the Caribbean island nation of Dominica and traveled to Africa, where she earned the International Credit Union Development Educator (ICUDE) designation. Her extensive contributions to the movement have also been recognized through her induction into the African American Credit Union Hall of Fame.
Madry has been equally dedicated to strengthening Indiana’s credit union movement through her service to the Indiana Credit Union League and Indiana Credit Union Foundation. She has served on numerous League committees and the Foundation’s Board of Directors. In a historic milestone, she became the first African American woman to chair the Indiana Credit Union League Board of Directors, leading its first all-female executive committee in 2022–2023.
Through her leadership, advocacy, and service, Madry has helped advance the League’s mission of supporting Indiana credit unions and their 2.8 million members while championing the value of credit unions on a national and international stage.
