INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana Credit Union League CEO John McKenzie will be retiring at year-end 2026. The League Board has named Chris Beaumont President, effective now, with a plan to transition him to the President/CEO role upon McKenzie’s retirement. McKenzie has headed the League since 1990, and Beaumont has been with the organization since 1997.
During McKenzie’s tenure over the League, the organization has undertaken many key initiatives to benefit the state’s credit unions while furthering the organization’s advocacy effectiveness, service capabilities, and financial strength. When he came to the League, after being EVP of the state’s corporate credit union, the organization had under a million dollars in retained earnings and now has over $30 million. Many key advocacy challenges were met to further credit union interests, such as the 1991 battle to preserve the independence of the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, the 1998 effort to protect field of membership expansion for federal credit unions, as well as protecting the federal tax exemption and interchange income through many challenges. At the state level, a major advocacy victory was won in 2002 when legislation was passed to substantially expand state-chartered credit union field of membership options. Building each year on advocacy strength and positioning was a passion for McKenzie and the organization. His efforts included numerous op-eds and electronic media appearances promoting the credit union difference. Supporting credit unions of all types and sizes was always a priority.
Service initiatives in major product areas included building a card services program and establishing a self-insured association health plan. Both provided a high level of service, attracting more than 70% market share among the state’s credit unions while providing millions of dollars in total cost savings to those credit unions, and at the same time building the organization’s financial strength. He was at the forefront of developing the state’s shared branching network, where the League continues to provide managerial and operational support for over 300 locations statewide, available to 80% of Indiana’s 2.8 million credit union members. During his tenure as League CEO, Indiana’s credit union membership grew by over a million Hoosiers, while total assets grew from $5 billion to over $47 billion.
McKenzie served on the CUNA (now America’s Credit Unions) board of directors and was a leader in raising funds for the construction of the Indiana Military Veterans Hall of Fame memorial building, where he continues serving on that organization’s board of directors. He worked with the World Council of Credit Unions to host credit union representatives from nine nations over a span of many years to support development efforts. In 2020, the Indiana League received the Distinguished Service Award from the World Council.
“It has been an honor to work for decades to further the success of Indiana’s credit unions and the League, striving to build a culture of strong, unified advocacy, collaboration, and commitment to the purpose that distinguishes credit unions,” stated McKenzie. “It has been a wonderful journey surrounded by tremendous credit union representatives including many wonderful League board members, as well as hard-working, dedicated League employees. I’ve been blessed to have this opportunity and look forward to a busy year again next year as CEO leading up to retirement, including working closely with long-time League colleague Chris Beaumont to move this leadership transition forward.”
Beaumont’s tenure at the League since 1997 has included being promoted to VP of Governmental Affairs in 2003, to Senior VP in 2017, and to Executive VP of League Services and Advocacy in 2020, with expanded responsibilities tied to each promotion. His career has had a tremendous positive impact on Indiana’s credit unions and the Indiana League, especially in legislative and regulatory advocacy. His hard work, dedication, and abilities have led to a continual expansion of his leadership role within the organization. The enhancements to the Indiana League’s advocacy capabilities over the past two decades would not have been possible without him. He has been named President in the recent succession planning restructuring, with all other management team positions reporting to him.
"I am grateful to the League Board for entrusting me with the opportunity to lead this tremendous organization," said Beaumont. "John has worked hard to build a deeply successful organization committed to tirelessly serving Indiana credit unions, and I look forward to working with our talented and dedicated team to build on the League's strengths and successes."
The Indiana Credit Union League is the statewide trade association for credit unions in Indiana. Those credit unions serve more than 2.8 million Hoosiers.
