INDIANAPOLIS – John McKenzie, CEO of the Indiana Credit Union League, has been named a Distinguished Hoosier by Gov. Mike Braun, one of the highest honors an Indiana citizen can receive. Chris Dietz, Deputy Director of the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions, presented the award during the League’s Advocacy Luncheon on Oct. 2. More than 200 representatives of Indiana credit unions attended the event.
The Distinguished Hoosier Award recognizes individuals who distinguish themselves through significant contributions to their communities and whose qualities and actions have earned the respect and appreciation of their fellow Hoosiers.
The recognition comes as McKenzie prepares to retire at the end of 2026, following more than four decades of work at the League on behalf of Indiana’s credit unions.
Adding to the significance of the occasion, a “Tribute to John McKenzie” was entered into the Congressional Record on Sept. 29 by U.S. Senator Jim Banks (R-IN). The tribute highlighted key initiatives McKenzie has championed to benefit Indiana’s credit unions, their leaders and employees, and the state’s 2.8 million credit union members, including the development of a card services program and a self-insured association health plan for credit union employees, which have provided millions of dollars in total cost savings to participants, as well as the development of a shared branching system and multiple advocacy successes on behalf of credit unions.
Dietz also presented McKenzie with a signed, printed copy of the Congressional Record during the luncheon.
In presenting the awards, Dietz recognized McKenzie for 40 years of legacy-building work that will continue to benefit Indiana’s credit unions and their members for generations to come.
McKenzie also received additional recognition for his career achievements and contributions to Indiana credit unions when he was inducted into the Indiana Credit Union Hall of Fame on the evening of Oct. 2.
McKenzie joined the Indiana Credit Union League in 1986, overseeing its Servicecorp division, and has since led a wide range of initiatives that have strengthened Indiana’s credit union movement, expanded the organization’s advocacy and service capabilities, and helped build its financial strength.
“I’m very appreciative of the opportunity for a career supporting credit unions and helping the Indiana League become more successful,” McKenzie stated. “It’s been a blessing to work with and be surrounded by such wonderful people throughout my career.”
After McKenzie’s retirement at the end of the year, League President Chris Beaumont will succeed him as President/CEO, effective Jan. 1, 2027.
